Personal Inventory: Understanding Where I'm Starting From

When ENG 390 began, I didn’t expect the first assignment to push me into self-reflection. The Personal Inventory assignment forced me to slow down and take a look at my skills, experiences, habits, and values that influence how I write. I don’t think I had ever really considered how much my background affects my ability to communicate in academic and professional settings.

The slides asked me to think about my strengths, weaknesses, and the lenses which I view writing. I realized quickly that while I’m confident in informal writing, creative work, journaling, and reflection, I can get scared when it comes to more structured, professional writing. I tend to write first and organize later, which is great for creativity but sometimes messy for workplace writing. Completing the inventory made it clear that this course is going to challenge me to develop writing processes that are disciplined, purposeful, and neat.

Another key takeaway was how much writing actually influences every professional field. I’ve always thought of writing as something you do for school, but this assignment showed me that writing is often the deciding factor in whether ideas get accepted, proposals get funded, or projects move forward. Realizing this gave the course some extra value, the skills you develop here will help far throughout your career and life.

The personal inventory also helped me begin outlining potential project ideas. I noticed I was interested in  topics like communication in workplaces, solving practical problems, and helping people. Those themes are probably going to influence the direction of my final project.

Overall, this assignment was less about filling out a worksheet and more about grounding myself before the semester really ramped up. It set the tone for ENG 390. Writing isn’t just a task, but a tool for  persuasion, planning, and professional growth.
